Facebook Buys Digital Book Publisher Push Pop Press
Facebook has acquired a digital book publisher Push Pop Press. The San Franciso-based startup announced the acquisition on its website on Tuesday, but did not disclose the terms of the deal. Push Pop Press was founded last year by former Apple employees Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris with the focus on creating iPad and iPhone compatible versions of print books.
The startup company became widely known for creating multimedia e-book version of “Our Choice,” Al Gore’s sequel to “An Inconvenient Truth.” The iPad and iPhone app was released earlier this year and it won the 2011 Apple Design Award.
“Now we’re taking our publishing technology and everything we’ve learned and are setting off to help design the world’s largest book, Facebook,” Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris wrote in a blog post on Push Pop Press website.
Even though Facebook purchased Push Pop Press, the world’s most popular social network does not have plans to enter the e-book business, Matas and Tsinteris said.
“Although Facebook isn’t planning to start publishing digital books, the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook, giving people even richer ways to share their stories,” they added.
Push Pop Press said that “Our Choice” will continue to be available for purchase, but the company will not publish new titles or continue to work on its digital publishing platform which was in private beta.
“We’re thrilled to confirm that we’ve acquired Push Pop Press, a startup whose groundbreaking software changes the way people publish and consume digital content,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “We can’t wait for co-founders Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris to get started, and for some of the technology, ideas and inspiration behind Push Pop Press to become part of how millions of people connect and share with each other on Facebook.”
