Google Buys Local Daily Deal Aggregator Dealmap
Google has bought the daily deal aggregator Dealmap. The acquisition was officially confirmed Monday on Dealmap’s blog, but the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Dealmap was launched in May 2010 and the service collects local deals from more than 450 unique sources allowing users to see deals through its mobile apps, website and daily deals email newsletter. Dealmap says that over 400,000 local and daily deals are available through its service each day. The company experienced rapid growth and, according to Dealmap, the service has two million users of its web, mobile and email products and 85 million monthly visitors through its partner network. Dealmap has more than 50 commercial distribution partners, including Microsoft, CityGrid, MerchantCircle and MyPoints.
“We believe Google provides the ideal platform to help us accelerate our growth and fulfill our mission,” Dealmap blog says. “We’re passionate about helping people save money while having great local experiences, and in Google we’ve found the perfect partner that shares this passion, as well as our vision and strategy.”
The Dealmap says that for the time being, it will continue to support its core products and partner services and users will be able to access the local deals through Dealmap’s products.
By acquiring Delmap, Google adds a brand new dimension to its current efforts to compete with the leading players in the daily deals arena, Groupon and LivingSocial. The daily deals market is growing rapidly and was recently estimated at staggering 91 billion dollars. Few months ago Google launched Google Offers, its own daily deals service which the search giant rolled out after failing to purchase Groupon for six billion dollars.
Google Offers was initially launched in Portland, and is currently available in New York City and San Francisco. The company plans launch Offers soon to Austin, Boston, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Seattle.
