Google Releases the First Google+ APIs for Developers

Google has released the first set of APIs for its social network Google+. The search giant’s social project was launched in June and shortly after analysts released the data showing that Google+ is the fastest growing social network in history, surpassing 10 million users in the first two weeks.

Research firm comScore reported in July that Google+ had hit the milestone of 25 million that month, and it is speculated that the number has now climbed to 30 million users worldwide. Now Google+ is finally opening to developers who’ve been eagerly waiting to take advantage of the service since its launch.

“I’m super excited about how the Google+ project brings the richness and nuance of real-life sharing to software, and today we’re announcing our first step toward bringing this to your apps as well by launching the Google+ public data APIs,” Google’s Chris Chabot wrote in a Google+ post.

Google noted that released APIs are limited in a way that the apps retrieve public posts and public profile data only. “These APIs allow you to retrieve the public profile information and public posts of the Google+ users, and they lay the foundation for us to build on together – Nothing great is ever built in a vacuum so I’m excited to start the conversation about what the Google+ platform should look like,” Chabot wrote.

The company said that all apps need to be registered before they can send requests to the Google+ API. Additional information and technical detail on Google+ APIs can be found at new Google Developers site.
