
Double-digit non-store sales growth expected; Smartphones to influence $36 billion in retail store sales

Ericsson, a company that provides technology and services to telecom operators, is forecasting a ten fold growth in mobile data traffic by 2016. The company says that video is going to be the main driver behind this growth. In its latest Traffic and Market Data report, Ericsson also forecasts that mobile broadband subscriptions will see a 60% jump in one year and are expected to reach almost 5 billion in 2016.
The global smartphone market grew 42.6% year over year in the Q3 2011, but the growth was lower than IDC’s forecast of 49.1%. IDC’s recent report Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, found that smartphone vendors shipped 118.1 million units in 3Q11 compared to 82.8 million units in the 3Q10.
